When quiet is important in a bedroom, children’s room or home office, an interior door should not be selected by appearance alone. Sound insulation depends on the entire door assembly: the leaf, frame, seals, floor clearance and installation quality.
Even a heavy door will not provide the expected result if gaps remain around the leaf.
What does door sound insulation mean?
The ability of a door assembly to reduce airborne sound may be expressed using an Rw rating in decibels — dB.
A higher verified value indicates that the tested construction provides a greater reduction in the transmission of speech, television and other household noise.
The rating should apply to the complete tested door assembly rather than only to the material inside the leaf. The assembly includes the leaf, frame, seals, threshold and specified hardware.
If a particular decibel rating is advertised, request the corresponding technical documentation or test report.
How does the door core affect sound insulation?
Lightweight hollow doors generally provide less resistance to sound transmission. Greater mass and density usually give a door more potential to reduce noise.
For rooms where quiet is important, customers commonly choose:
a solid or reinforced core;
a tubular particleboard core;
a special multilayer acoustic construction.
A honeycomb core makes a door lighter and more economical, but it is generally intended for situations where increased sound insulation is not the main requirement.
Thickness alone does not determine performance. Two leaves of the same thickness can have different cores, weights and test results.
Why are frame seals important?
A rubber seal closes the gap between the leaf and frame. It also helps the door close more softly.
The seal should be continuous, undamaged and make even contact with the leaf. If the door does not press against it correctly, sound can pass through the remaining gaps.
The gap beneath the door
A clearance between the leaf and finished floor is needed for free movement, but an open gap also allows sound to pass easily.
The result can be improved with:
a conventional sealed threshold;
an automatic drop seal;
a suitable bottom seal.
An automatic drop seal lowers when the door closes and seals the floor gap. It retracts into the leaf when the door is opened.
What if the property has heat-recovery ventilation?
A ventilation system may rely on the gap beneath the door to transfer air between rooms. Completely sealing this gap could interfere with the intended airflow.
Sound insulation and ventilation must therefore be coordinated before the door is ordered. Any alternative air-transfer route should be designed by a ventilation specialist.
Are glazed doors sound insulating?
The result depends on the glass thickness and construction, glazed area, fixing method and airtightness of the complete door assembly.
A conventional decorative glazed door should not automatically be considered an acoustic door. When verified sound reduction is required, select a tested complete construction.
Why is correct installation important?
Installation must provide a straight frame, properly filled mounting gaps, correctly adjusted hinges and even contact between the leaf and seals.
An automatic drop seal should contact the floor evenly across the full width. Gaps between the frame and wall or beneath the leaf can substantially reduce the performance of the complete system.
Which door is suitable for a bedroom or office?
To reduce normal household noise, consider:
a dense, solid or tubular particleboard core;
a frame with a quality perimeter seal;
correctly selected hinges and lock;
the smallest necessary floor clearance;
an automatic drop seal when compatible with ventilation;
professional installation.
