When selecting an interior door, customers often first see the price of the door leaf. However, a leaf alone is not enough to install and use the door. The final cost depends on the complete specification, opening dimensions, hardware, delivery and installation.

Offers from different suppliers can only be compared fairly when they include the same components.

1. Door leaf

The leaf is the moving part of the door. Its price depends on its construction, core, finish, dimensions and design.

Door leaves may be painted, veneered, laminated, glazed or decorated with routed patterns and inserts. Standard and oversized doors will also have different prices.

Always check whether the displayed amount is for the leaf alone or for a complete door set.

2. Door frame

The frame is installed inside the prepared opening and supports the door leaf.

The correct frame depends on the wall thickness, opening direction, door construction, hinge type and whether frame extensions are required.

A concealed door uses a special aluminium frame designed to be integrated into the wall instead of a conventional visible frame.

3. Architraves

Architraves cover the installation gap between the door frame and wall. They may be required on one or both sides of the opening.

Check whether the quotation includes architraves, how many pieces are provided, whether both sides are covered and which profile and width have been selected.

Concealed door systems normally do not use architraves.

4. Frame extensions

If the wall is thicker than the door frame, extensions are used to cover the remaining depth of the opening.

Their price depends on the wall thickness, material and required quantity. The wall depth should therefore be measured in several places before the order is calculated.

5. Hinges

Hinges support the door leaf and allow it to open.

A set may use conventional hinges, butterfly hinges or adjustable concealed hinges. The correct type and quantity depend on the dimensions, weight and construction of the leaf.

Tall or heavy doors may require three hinges or a model with a higher load capacity.

6. Lock or latch

An interior door can be fitted with a conventional or magnetic latch.

Bathrooms and toilets normally require a lock with a privacy turn. A bedroom or office may use a key-operated or cylinder lock.

Check whether the lock body and the necessary factory preparation are included in the price.

7. Door handle

Handles are usually selected separately because their design, material, finish and price vary considerably.

Decorative roses, a privacy turn, cylinder, key escutcheon and door stop may also be required. A lock included in the door set does not necessarily mean that the handle is included.

8. Seal and threshold

A seal installed in the frame helps the door close more softly.

A conventional threshold, ventilation gap or automatic drop seal is selected according to the room’s function. If the property has a heat-recovery ventilation system, the required airflow between rooms must also be considered.

9. Measurement, delivery and installation

Measurement, delivery, removal of old doors, installation of the new set and preparation of the opening may be calculated separately.

Request a detailed specification listing the leaf, frame, architraves, extensions, hinges, lock, handle, delivery and installation separately.

A low starting price for the leaf may look attractive, but the final amount will change when all required components are added. Always compare doors with equivalent specifications.
